The United States could be losing up to $1.4 trillion in gross domestic product — or 6.7 percent potential growth in GDP — due to low rates of adult literacy, according to a new analysis provided to POLITICO.

Despite intensive government intervention since 2001 (with the Reading First program, literacy rates continue to decline.  The Reading First Impact Study Final Report by the U.S. Department of Education declares that:

  • “Reading First did not produce a statistically significant impact on student reading comprehension test scores in grades one, two or three.”
  • “There was no consistent pattern of effects over time in the impact estimates for reading instruction in grade one or in reading comprehension in any grade.”
  • “There appeared to be a systematic decline in reading instruction impacts in grade two over time.”
  • “There was no relationship between reading comprehension and the number of years a student was exposed to RF.”

It is clear that an alternate approach is needed.

Functional Literacy Solved

Clarity Learning Centres International set out on a six-year research and development program to isolate the true factors behind functional literacy.  After isolating root causes behind illiteracy, it engaged in a 10,000 hour development and piloting program to create a remedy to functional literacy and reading comprehension — one that works 100 percent of the time.

The answer is too simple to be believed.  It is the “elephant in the room” that went unnoticed due to the assumption that “everybody already knows these basics”.   To illustrate, take this “easy” functional literacy test .   Anyone might think he can pass, but to date, not one person (who has not done our literacy program) has successfully passed.  It will surprise you!

Up to fifty percent of any English sentence consists of what we refer to as simple words.  These are words like “and,” “at,”  “in,” “to,” and so on.  If one were to remove only five of these words from one’s vocabulary one would find it difficult to put together most proper sentences.

This factor goes entirely overlooked and is completely missing from our education system.  It is an overriding factor in functional literacy.

The Ollie the Elephant — Learning Made Easy: English Basic Words series is designed to create understanding, literacy, and fluency in the English language.

It is designed to create functional literacy.

Functional literacy goes beyond basic reading and writing skills.  It’s about the ability to understand and apply information.  It affects quality of work, customer service, sales, and general productivity.
